Image
Now you can send free text messages to your friends via Gmail! Search engine Google on Wednesday started rolling out free SMS service for its Gmail users in India. The service is reportedly also being rolled out for paid email Google Apps customers in India. Google India hasn't officially announced the new initiative yet, however several Gmail users have reported about receiving a notification about the new service. The message service enables users to send free text messages to mobile phones from their chat windows on  Gmail . To send text, users need to add mobile numbers of their contacts in the e-mail address book. The service begins with 50 SMSes credit for every user, with one SMS costing one credit. If you get reply from a mobile phone to your Gmail, 5 credits are added to your account. Maximum credit for SMS is 50. Google  has teamed up with various India cellular operators to roll out the service. The partnership hints that the operators would also

Mozilla Releases First 'Firefox Metro Preview' for Windows 8

Image
ust in time for some last-minute testing, Mozilla has released the first preview of itsFirefox Web browser built for Windows 8's 'Modern UI' interface. Admittedly, 'Modern UI' doesn't quite roll off the tongue like 'Metro', so Mozilla has decided to stick with the term despite Microsoft's opposition to it. 'Firefox Metro Preview' can be installed to Windows 8 using the latest development package grabbed from the Elm development folder (for most, the installer.exe file will be most suitable). After the install, Firefox will  need  to be made the default browser. If it's not, clicking the icon inside of the Start screen will simply bring you to the desktop variant of the browser. In personal tests, it seems that all Web browsers under Windows 8 work like this, which is a little unfortunate. As the screenshot can attest, this version of Firefox will feel familiar to anyone who's used a recent version of the browser on either iOS o

Concept Eco-friendly charger EcoCharge

Image
EcoCharge – is a portable and environmentally friendly charger which converts thermal energy (from heaters, etc.) into electricity.  EcoCharge system concept  looks like a  portable system  that will not only play nice with your cookware, but will work with any surface that can produce heat.  Thanks to magnets placed on the body, charging can be attached to different surfaces.  It will also come equipped with an  OLED display  that will communicate its conduction efficiency to let users know how efficiently their  devices  are being charged. Unfortunately, this  a concept.  But would love to have it in reality!  Is not it?

Concept widescreen printer

I’d like to print on large paper size. In this case, you want to use this printer, which is placed on a tabletop. Here can see the concept of such a printer.  Compact printer  model will solve the problem of lack of space on the  office  desk. Its body has a sliding telescopic design.  This allows you to print even drawings in A2 format. You'll also get a handy  touchscreen  color LCD display to navigate through the menu, and it is going to use individual ink tanks under CMYK mode.  It would be cool to get such type of printer that would compatible with wide range of paper sizes. Let this concept turn into reality!

Union minister Kapil Sibal has said the Indian government's ultra low-cost Aakash 2 tablet will be available to students on November 11. The minister further said that the new version of the Aakash tablet PC will come with 1GHz processor, four-hour battery time, capacitive screen and Android 4.0 operating system. According to the minister, the price of the device will brought down to around Rs. 1,500, by conducting manufacturing activities in India. “Hopefully on November 11, you will see the President talking to 20,000 students from across the nation, who will have their hands on Aakash,” Sibal said at the Economic Editors’ Conference. “At the moment, we are actually formulating a Cabinet note for the manufacturing of five million Aakash tablets without any financial burden on the Ministry of Finance,” he added. Microsoft Announces Portfolio of Xbox Live Games for Windows 8

Image
As addictive as it was in the ‘90s, Solitaire isn’t going to cut it as the flagship game for  Windows 8 . In fact, no one game really will: Microsoft is making tons of games available. The plan is to bring  Xbox Live  games to Windows 8, so users can get their game on whether they’re using a desktop, laptop, or even a tablet. The company is releasing so many games for Windows 8 that it’s sending the games in waves.  As you might expect, the games will be tied tightly to Xbox Live, which means you’ll be able to keep track of Xbox Achievements, use multiplayer modes, and do other things that Xbox Live users are already able to do.  Studios large and small are on board with the plan, including Gameloft, Glu Mobile, Halfbrick Studios, Miniclip,  Rovio , ZeptoLab, and of course,  Microsoft Studios . Microsoft developed 29 of the games to be released in the first wave. Some of the titles you’ll see include Angry Birds, Cut The Rope, Reckless Racing Ultimate, and

Linus Torvalds Releases Linux 3.6 Final

Image
While we spent Sunday watching the Patriots beat up on the Bills, Linus Torvalds was busy putting the final touches on the Linux 3.6 kernel, which he released in final form to the public yesterday afternoon. He had previously contemplated building one more Release Candidate, which would have been the eighth, but after a week since announcing an rc8 build might be in the works, Torvalds said he couldn't find a major reason to do another RC. "So here it is, 3.6 final. Sure, I'd have been happier with even fewer changes, but that just never happens. And holding off the release until people get too bored to send me the small stuff just makes the next merge window more painful," Torvalds explained on a message board. "The changes that got merged this week were generally pretty tiny, but more importantly, they tend to be small or very unlikely/special things. Famous last words." Perhaps Torvalds is being a bit modest. Linux 3.6 i

Facebook Begins Deleting Fake User Accounts and Fake Likes

Image
In a roundabout sort of way,  Facebook  tattled on itself earlier in the summer when, in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), it  fessed up to the fact  that nearly 9 percent of the social networking site's accounts are fake, bogus, the unreal McCoy. Or, as Facebook labeled them, "undesirable" or "false" accounts, which are those that belong to spammers or "where users have created personal profiles for a business, organization, or non-human entity such as a pet." Let the clean-up act begin. As promised, Facebook has started deleting fake accounts and Page Likes. In a Facebook Security blog post last month, the site said it would soon be purging certain accounts and Likes in order to improve the integrity of the social networking service, a move that was expected to affect, on average, less than 1 percent of Likes on any given Page. For some, that adds up to a lot of Likes. Source: PageData Zynga's

Microsoft Details Windows 8 And IE10 Internal Testing

Image
A product is only as good as its creators say it is, and in the case of  Windows  8, it looks as if it's not going to hit store shelves until those within Microsoft's walls test the heck out of it. A new blog post today over at the company's site details the story of deploying Windows 8 within  Microsoft , which it fondly refers to as "dogfooding." Basically, it's the forced act of eating their own dogfood. It's a pretty strange, potentially graphic visual, but it goes to show that the company isn't taking the launch lightly. According to Microsoft, it "enables the IT department to help Microsoft’s product teams deliver higher quality products and services to customers, both near-term and long-term." Currently, a few products in the Microsoft stable have hit this position, but it's Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10 Release Preview getting the most attention. As of mid-July, over 30,000 systems and nearly 30,000 empl

Intel Launches Clover Trail Atom Z2760 SoC

Image
Though we gave you a glimpse of it in our  IDF  2012 coverage, Intel is officially unveiling their new Atom Z2760 dual-core SoC (System on Chip), code named Clover Trail.  The Z2760 is a dual-core Atom-based chip with a 1.8GHz clock frequency and support for Intel Hyperthreading technology which allows two cores to process four threads to enhance performance in multithreaded workloads.   Clover Trail  is manufactured using Intel's 32nm process node and is targeted at ultra-mobile computing applications like tablets and adjacent convertible devices.  Imagination Technologies'  PowerVR  SGX545 graphics core has been coupled with the Atom architecture on the Z2760 for what Intel claims will be the best, low-power  Windows 8  tablet experience available when they begin to ship from a number of top name manufacturers in the coming months. In fact Intel is claiming design wins from virtually all the top brands, including:  Acer, ASUS, Dell, Fujitsu, LG, Samsung, ZTE , and
