Nokia has launched a succession of new phones in various price segments over the past month after first-quarter results showed a surprisingly steep drop in lower-end handset sales.

iPhone 5S, 6 to launch in August: Analyst

Image
The next generation Apple iPhone is likely to be launched in August or September 2013, an analyst has predicted. According to This Week In Apple Rumors, Barclays analyst Kirk Yang predicted that the next iPhone would land in August or September, along with a cheaper iPhone aimed at emerging markets. That August/September prognostication puts him in line with a growing squad of Apple-watchers calling for a July/August/September release, including Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, Jeremy Horwitz of iLounge, Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster and Peter Misek of Jeffries, the Huff Post reports. Kuo and Horwitz are the two prognosticators-to-watch as they've proven to be accurate in the past, the report said. According to the report, if the rumour turns out to be true, then the new iPhone would be launched about a year after the introduction of the iPhone 5, on September 12.

Paper Phone

Image
Researchers from Queen’s University in Kingston have invented the thinnest cellphone we’ve ever met. It looks no thinner than a credit card and features a good flexibility that allows the users to bend it in various ways. Moreover, as you bend it, you’re actually controlling the phone: making a corner to bookmark a page or flipping the corner to get a new page. Really amazing and possibly such “bend gestures” method will be an overwhelming trend of the future too. (Image & post taken from inewidea.com) There is also a short video explaining to us how to use the phone, extremely interesting and cool! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rl-qygUEE2c&feature=youtu.be

Mozilla Releases First 'Firefox Metro Preview' for Windows 8

Image
ust in time for some last-minute testing, Mozilla has released the first preview of itsFirefox Web browser built for Windows 8's 'Modern UI' interface. Admittedly, 'Modern UI' doesn't quite roll off the tongue like 'Metro', so Mozilla has decided to stick with the term despite Microsoft's opposition to it. 'Firefox Metro Preview' can be installed to Windows 8 using the latest development package grabbed from the Elm development folder (for most, the installer.exe file will be most suitable). After the install, Firefox will  need  to be made the default browser. If it's not, clicking the icon inside of the Start screen will simply bring you to the desktop variant of the browser. In personal tests, it seems that all Web browsers under Windows 8 work like this, which is a little unfortunate. As the screenshot can attest, this version of Firefox will feel familiar to anyone who's used a recent version of the browser on either iOS o...

Microsoft Announces Portfolio of Xbox Live Games for Windows 8

Image
As addictive as it was in the ‘90s, Solitaire isn’t going to cut it as the flagship game for  Windows 8 . In fact, no one game really will: Microsoft is making tons of games available. The plan is to bring  Xbox Live  games to Windows 8, so users can get their game on whether they’re using a desktop, laptop, or even a tablet. The company is releasing so many games for Windows 8 that it’s sending the games in waves.  As you might expect, the games will be tied tightly to Xbox Live, which means you’ll be able to keep track of Xbox Achievements, use multiplayer modes, and do other things that Xbox Live users are already able to do.  Studios large and small are on board with the plan, including Gameloft, Glu Mobile, Halfbrick Studios, Miniclip,  Rovio , ZeptoLab, and of course,  Microsoft Studios . Microsoft developed 29 of the games to be released in the first wave. Some of the titles you’ll see include Angry Birds, Cut The Rop...

Linus Torvalds Releases Linux 3.6 Final

Image
While we spent Sunday watching the Patriots beat up on the Bills, Linus Torvalds was busy putting the final touches on the Linux 3.6 kernel, which he released in final form to the public yesterday afternoon. He had previously contemplated building one more Release Candidate, which would have been the eighth, but after a week since announcing an rc8 build might be in the works, Torvalds said he couldn't find a major reason to do another RC. "So here it is, 3.6 final. Sure, I'd have been happier with even fewer changes, but that just never happens. And holding off the release until people get too bored to send me the small stuff just makes the next merge window more painful," Torvalds explained on a message board. "The changes that got merged this week were generally pretty tiny, but more importantly, they tend to be small or very unlikely/special things. Famous last words." Perhaps Torvalds is being a bit modest. Linux 3.6 i...

Microsoft Details Windows 8 And IE10 Internal Testing

Image
A product is only as good as its creators say it is, and in the case of  Windows  8, it looks as if it's not going to hit store shelves until those within Microsoft's walls test the heck out of it. A new blog post today over at the company's site details the story of deploying Windows 8 within  Microsoft , which it fondly refers to as "dogfooding." Basically, it's the forced act of eating their own dogfood. It's a pretty strange, potentially graphic visual, but it goes to show that the company isn't taking the launch lightly. According to Microsoft, it "enables the IT department to help Microsoft’s product teams deliver higher quality products and services to customers, both near-term and long-term." Currently, a few products in the Microsoft stable have hit this position, but it's Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10 Release Preview getting the most attention. As of mid-July, over 30,000 systems and nearly 30,000 empl...

Intel Launches Clover Trail Atom Z2760 SoC

Image
Though we gave you a glimpse of it in our  IDF  2012 coverage, Intel is officially unveiling their new Atom Z2760 dual-core SoC (System on Chip), code named Clover Trail.  The Z2760 is a dual-core Atom-based chip with a 1.8GHz clock frequency and support for Intel Hyperthreading technology which allows two cores to process four threads to enhance performance in multithreaded workloads.   Clover Trail  is manufactured using Intel's 32nm process node and is targeted at ultra-mobile computing applications like tablets and adjacent convertible devices.  Imagination Technologies'  PowerVR  SGX545 graphics core has been coupled with the Atom architecture on the Z2760 for what Intel claims will be the best, low-power  Windows 8  tablet experience available when they begin to ship from a number of top name manufacturers in the coming months. In fact Intel is claiming design wins from virtually a...

Intel Announces Ultra-Gadget Concept: Cove Point Win 8 Ultrabook Tablet

Image
Is it an ultrabook? Is it a tablet? The Windows 8 hybrid revealed by Intel at this year’s  Intel Developer Forum  definitely is a must-have gadget, in case anyone had any doubts left. Now, not many of you may yet be familiar with the ultrabook concept, which is precisely why this item was only unveiled at the event where tech innovators from all over the world congregate – at the aforementioned convention in Beijing. Basically, an ultrabook is a much more powerful, yet comparatively smaller laptop. This particular item, however, also adds tablet functionality to the device, which will be cutting-edge enough to run the all-new Windows 8 operating system. Check out the video below, for a better picture of the gadget.

WiGig technology to reach smartphones and tablets in the near future If you ever wondered where the IT industry will go from Wi-Fi, the answer (at least a part of it) is WiGig, a new technology that allows for wireless data transfer rates of up to 7 Gbps, an impressive 10 times faster than 802.11n Wi-Fi. However, due to the fact that these high speeds are obtained by using the 60GHz band, the range of action is drastically lowered to no more than a few meters, not to mention the signal’s inability to pass through walls. Despite this disadvantages, however, WiGig remains a great way to transfer/stream files between devices. In addition, judging by the fact that founding WiGig Alliance members include companies such as Intel, AMD, Cisco, Nvidia, Qualcomm, and many others, WiGig is shaping up to be a standard that most big companies endorse, something equally important as actual performance when it comes to the global adoption of a standard. Backwards compatibility with c...
