Android, iOS face heat from rivals Tizen, Ubuntu, others

Image
A handful of new smartphone platforms are expected to become available this year, challenging the stranglehold of the two market leaders, Google's Android and Apple's iOS.  Android and Apple account for more than 90 percent of the surging smartphone market, and third place is being contested by BlackBerry and Microsoft's Windows Phone.  But phones using operating systems based on the open-source platforms Linux and Mozilla's Firefox will be hitting the market this year, most likely in emerging markets.  Among smartphone makers, "there is a consensus that there is room for a couple more operating systems," said Ramon Llamas, analyst with the research firm IDC.  "Maybe not globally, but in some markets which could be used as proving grounds."  An IDC survey showed Apple and Android accounted for 91.1 percent of all smartphones sold in 2012, but that new platforms are worth watching in a market with 46 percent growth last year.

Cloud Data Storage Providers That Offers Freemium Service

Image
Probably you've got important documents, videos, music or other stuffs that needs to be shared across multiple devices, using  cloud storage technology  is for now the easiest option you've got and the number of people it are increasingly by day. Cloud Storage  has come to say and with so many  cloud service providers , you may be wondering which one could be right for you. The list below will help you based on general summary of each popular cloud service. First, let look at what cloud storage is for the benefit of those that don't know what it is. According to  wikipedia Cloud storage  is a model of networked online storage where data is stored in virtualized pools of storage which are generally hosted by third parties. Hosting companies operate large data centers, and people who require their data to be hosted buy or lease storage capacity from them. The data center operators, in the background, virtualize the resources according to the requirements of the customer

How To Bypass The Lockcode Screen On IOS 6.1 And Use Anyone’s IPhone

Image
Apple has had a few problems with its latest iPhone and  iPad software update . Released just last month, iOS 6.1 was meant to be a relatively significant update bringing enhanced Siri capabilities, LTE support to more countries, and more iTunes Match features. But it seems as if the update is doing more harm than good. The Verge reports that a new bug, "lets anyone bypass your iPhone password lock and access your  phone app , view or modify contacts, check your  voicemail, and look through your photos (by attempting to add a photo to a contact)." The instructions are pretty simple. First you have to pretend to turn the phone off, then make an aborted  emergency call , then a quick bit of off button and cancel pressing. That boots you into the full  phone app  where you can pretty much call or  message  anyone you like, or edit phone contacts. Besides allowing anyone access to your phone, Apple's latest software update also drains your battery much faster than usual

Turn Windows 8 PC Into Wi-Fi Hot Spot

Image
In Windows 8, Microsoft  quietly removed  a useful networking feature: ad-hoc networks. In Windows 7 (and previous OSes), the tool could turn your PC into a Wi-Fi hot spot, allowing it to share its Ethernet or other Internet connection with other devices by broadcasting its own network. So, if you paid for Internet  access at  a cafe, or you're at work, and want to share your PC's Internet with your phone or tablet, this feature would let you do that. It is very possible to do this in Windows 8, but the built-in method requires fiddling with the command prompt. And for some of us, walking into that black abyss is daunting. Instead, check out  Virtual Router Plus . It's a free, open-source program that does the geek work for you, allowing you to quickly fire up an ad-hoc network whenever you need one. Once you've downloaded  the file , extract it, and launch the VirtualRouterPlus file within that folder. There's no real  installation  here -- the program will s

Google Driverless Car

Image
I could still remember the day I watch the iRobot as a teen, and being skeptical about my brother’s statement that one day, the driverless car will become reality. And it’s now a reality, made possible by… a search engine company, Google. While the data source is still a secret recipe, the  Google driverless car  is powered by artificial intelligence that utilizes the input from the video cameras inside the car, a sensor on the vehicle’s top, and some radar and position sensors attached to different positions of the car. Sounds like a lot of effort to mimic the human intelligence in a car, but so far the system has successfully driven 1609 kilometres without human commands! (Image Source:  Wikipedia ) “You can count on one hand the number of years it will take before ordinary people can experience this.” Google co-founder, Sergey Brin said. However, innovation is an achievement, consumerization is the headache, as Google currently face the challenge to forge the system into an

Project Fiona

Image
Meet the first generation of the gaming tablet. Razer’s  Project Fiona  is a serious gaming tablet built for hardcore gaming. Once it’s out, it will be the frontier for the future tablets, as tech companies might want to build their own tablets, dedicated towards gaming, but for now Fiona is the only possible one that will debut in 2013. This beast features next generation Intel® Core i7 processor geared to render all your favorite PC games, all at the palm of your hands. Crowned as the best gaming accessories manufacturer, Razer clearly knows how to build user experience straight into the tablet, and that means 3-axis gyro, magnetometer, accelerometer and full-screen user interface supporting multi-touch. My body and soul are ready.

Eye Tribe

Image
Eye tracking has been actively discussed by technology enthusiasts throughout these years, but it’s really challenging to implement. But  Eye Tribe  actually did this. They successfully created the technology to allow you to control your tablet, play flight simulator, and even slice fruits in Fruit Ninja only with your eye movements. It’s basically taking the common eye-tracking technology and combining it with a front-facing camera plus some serious computer-vision algorithm, and voila, fruit slicing done with the eyes! A live demo was done in LeWeb this year and we may actually be able to see it in in action in mobile devices in 2013. Currently the company is still seeking partnership to bring this sci-fi tech into the consumer market but you and I know that this product is simply too awesome to fail.

Leap Motion

Image
Multi-touch desktop is a (miserably) failed product due to the fact that hands could get very tired with prolonged use, but  Leap Motion  wants to challenge this dark area again with a more advanced idea. It lets you control the desktop with fingers, but without touching the screen. It’s not your typical motion sensor, as Leap Motion allows you to scroll the web page, zoom in the map and photos, sign documentss and even play a first person shooter game with only hand and finger movements. The smooth reaction is the most crucial key point here. More importantly, you can own this future with just $70, a price of a premium PS3 game title! If this device could completely work with Oculus Rift to simulate a real-time gaming experience, gaming is going to get a major make-over.

Oculus Rift

Image
Virtual Reality gaming is here in the form of  Oculus Rift . This history-defining 3D headset lets you mentally feel that you are actually inside a video game. In the Rift’s virtual world, you could turn your head around with ultra-low latency to view the world in high resolution display. There are premium products in the market that can do the same, but Rift wants you to enjoy the experience at only $300, and the package even comes as a development kit. This is the beginning of the revolution for next-generation gaming. The timing is perfect as the world is currently bombarded with the virtual reality topic that could also be attributed to Sword Art Online, the anime series featuring the characters playing games in an entirely virtual world. While we’re getting there, it could take a few more years to reach that level of realism. Oculus Rift is our first step.

Form 1

Image
Just as the term suggests,  3D printing  is the technology that could forge your digital design into a solid real-life product. It’s nothing new for the advanced mechanical industry, but a personal 3D printer is definitely a revolutionary idea. Everybody can create their own physical product based on their custom design, and no approval needed from any giant manufacturer! Even the James Bond’s Aston Martin which was crashed in the movie  was a 3D printed product! Form 1  is one such personal 3D printer which can be yours at just $2799. It may sound like a high price but to have the luxury of getting producing your own prototypes, that’s a reaonable price. Imagine a future where every individual professional has the capability to mass produce their own creative physical products without limitation. This is the future where personal productivity and creativity are maximized.

Google Glass

Image
Augmented Reality  has already gotten into our life in the forms of simulated experiment and education app, but Google is taking it several steps higher with  Google Glass . Theoretically, with Google Glass, you are able to view  social media  feeds, text, Google Maps, as well as navigate with GPS and take photos. You will also get the latest updates while you are on the ground. It’s truly what we called vision, and it’s absolutely possible given the fact that the Google’s co-founder, Sergey Brin has  demo’ed the glass  with skydivers and creatives. Currently the device is only available to some developers with the price tag of $1500, but expect other tech companies trying it out and building an affordable consumer version.

LG rumored to be creating smartwatch contender

Image
First it was Pebble to bring smartwatches to the mainstream, and from the looks of it, several big companies are looking to make a dent in the same market, including Apple, Samsung, Google, and now LG. It’s rumored that LG will be joining the three other companies to compete in making a next-generation smartwatch. According to The Korea Times, not only is LG currently working on a smartwatch, but they’re also developing another wearable piece of technology, which is said to be something similar to Google Glass. This rumored smartwatch from LG would be able to sync to your smartphone and provide notifications and the like to the smartwatch. As for the software side of things, it’s said that this supposed smartwatch will either run Android or Mozilla’s Firefox mobile operating system, both of which are tipped to be viable options for the company, although they’ve already been working with Android for a while now, so that seems like the more obvious choice at this point. Both A

Google Smartwatch is latest in essentially baseless claims of wearables

Image
If you’ve been waiting for a smartwatch ever since Apple released the super-cute iPod that fit perfectly on a wristwatch strap, you may be in luck – Google is reportedly making one running Android. But then there’ve been reports of Apple making a smartwatch too. And LG is making one as well, and Samsung, and who knows which other companies – smartwatches from every angle, I tell you! But today’s report about Google comes from the Financial Times where they’ve got an inside contact, so it’s best we listen. If you see what the Financial Times notes, they’ve got a “person briefed on the project” who says that though larger projects like Glass are being created in the Google X laboratories, this supposed Google smartwatch is being developed for by the Google Android unit. What we must assume here is that, if the watch were real, it’d be created by one of Google’s hardware partners – perhaps Motorola? Meanwhile the Google developers on-staff creating Android would be taming a version

Google launches Evernote rival Keep

Image
Google has launched a new app that would allow users to sync their notes and to-do lists across their computer, phone and tablet using Google account.  Google's Katharine Kuan detailed the firm's blog that with the help of 'Google Keep' people can quickly jot ideas down when they think of them and even include checklists and photos to keep track of what's important for them.  The app works very similarly to the other note apps, like Evernote and OneNote, ABC News reports.  The app is available for only Android 4.0 phones right now.  It takes users' notes and then they can access them via the app on the web, which is located in their Google Drive. They can also access the notes from the company's website after logging in via their Google accounts.  Users are able to upload voice notes, which can be transcribed, and even photos, the report said.  One can also colour code notes and turn some notes into checklists by adding check boxes

LG launches 100-inch class laser TV

Image
LG has announced that it is set to launch the LG Laser TV. We first talked about the product back in January during CES when it was originally announced. The 100-inch Class Laser TV isn’t your typical television, it’s actually a short throw projector and large projection screen combination. The 100-inch screen combined with the ultra short throw laser projector creates a 100-inch full HD resolution picture. The system also supports LG’s Smart TV platform allowing access to streaming content on the big screen and more. LG has now announced the TV will be available in April. As you probably guessed with a 100-inch Laser TV, the price isn’t exactly cheap. The LG Laser TV will cost $8999. LG says the TV will provide a brilliant home theater experience with a 1080p resolution image and 150 nits of brightness. LG promises that the image will “pop” even in a brighter environment. One of the big benefits of the LG system compared to a typical projector is that LG’s laser TV can be pos
